What is it? Heartworm Weekend was something that we used to to in years past before year around testing was approved. However, during times of economic stress, I have found that the heartworm test and medications happen to get forgotten! In our area the high risk of heartworm requires that all dogs get protection from this terrible disease. For dogs who have been on medication regularly in the past year, they could get their test done with their annual examination but to make it even easier, we have started up this drop in clinic - no appointment necessary! During this one day event, we will be able to offer wellness testing as well as the standard heartworm tests and have an opportunity to provide medications to prevent fleas and heartworm for the entire 7 month season.
Why? All dogs that live in the Brantford area are at risk for getting a mosquito bite from and infected mosquito. A single bite can carry thousands of baby worms into your dog. Although monthly medications are an important part of protecting your dog, they are not 100% Every year there are a significant number of dogs who get infected despite the medications so, annual testing is essential in our high risk area. Brantford is one of the highest risk areas in Canada. What may be acceptable in a low risk area, is not here! Testing is most accurate if it is performed six and a half months after the end of the previous year's season. Despite the climatic change, the season still ended about the middle of October last fall. So the earliest accurate test would not be till the beginning of May.
When? We will be ready to start our drop in clinic as of 9:00 on Saturday May 12 and will continue till 5:00pm. Remember, this is a DROP IN clinic with no appointments needed. There may be line ups during peak times.
Who? All dogs in the Brantford area need heartworm protection! If your dog has not had the test in the last 12 months, this is a great opportunity to get not only the heartworm test but also a wellness profile. We are accepting new patients at this time so the invitation is to all dog owners in the area.
How? We will have three teams of Registered Veterinary Technicians available to collect the blood samples. I will be available to discuss which preventive medication would be the best choice for your family. We intend to have some fun with with all of our plaza neighbors so be sure to visit them when you come. Strodes Deli will be operating a BBQ event in our parking lot. Unfortunately, the College of Veterinarians prevents us from indicating the prices in this notification so call our hospital at 519 753-7257 for pricing information.
Sincerely,
Dr Thomas Mulder
